This course is designed for supervisors and managers who are required to complete health and safety risk assessments within their organisation, or manage those who do. Whether you’re new to writing risk assessments or looking to refine your skills, this course offers a theoretical and hands-on approach.

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles and practical tools needed to design, conduct, and manage a risk assessment programme.

Objectives

  2. Understand the crucial link between risk assessment, safe systems of work, supervision and management

  3. Gain the knowledge and skills to conduct and review suitable and sufficient risk assessments

  4. Learn to design, create and implement a risk assessment programme in your organisation

  5. Learn how to audit a risk assessment programme

  • Perception (a closer look at us | HSG48 Reducing Error and Influencing Behaviour | Performance Influencing Factors)

  • The moral, legal and financial reasons for producing suitable and sufficient H&S risk assessments

  • Reasonably practicable – What is it?

  • The link between risk assessment and Management and Supervision

  • The different types of risk assessment (General, COSHH, DSEAR, DSE, Fire, Manual handling, Noise, Stress, Vibration, etc.)

  • Where risk assessment sits within Emergency Preparedness and Response (First Aid Needs Assessment & Emergency Plan)

  • Designing and managing a risk assessment programme

  • Understanding a basic risk assessment template and risk criteria (Severity statements, Likelihood statements, Action Tables etc.)

  • Industry specific hazards or approaches

  • Undertaking a H&S risk assessment

  • Auditing a risk assessment programme

Structure

This course is delivered over 1.5 days using blended learning that combines self-study and a live virtual (tutor-led) workshop.

Pre-Course Work (via Course Learning Zone) 1 Day approximately: It is important that work is completed and progress will be verified on the platform

Complete and upload a hazard identification checklist for your own organisation.

Complete and upload a First Aid Needs Assessment for your own organisation (this helps appreciate hazards and Emergency Response)

Watch pre-recorded guidance videos and answer targeted questions on topics including:

  • The HSE guidance on health and safety risk assessment (including workplace stress)

  • Risk assessment requirements of ISO45001:2018 Health and safety management systems

  • Hazard identification techniques

  • Risk perception and its impact on risk assessing

  • The relationship between supervision and management, safe systems of work and risk assessment

  • Vulnerable workers: Lone workers, Migrant workers, New and Expectant Mothers, Young workers, Home working, Older workers etc.

  • Review of pre-course work and feedback

  • Analysing different risk assessments (matrix and non-matrix - General, COSHH, DSEAR, DSE, Fire, Manual handling, Noise, Stress, Vibration, etc.)

  • Industry-specific hazard identification and approaches

  • Guidance on auditing risk assessment programmes

  • Workshop activity: Writing a workplace risk assessment with real-time feedback

Assessment(s)

To best ensure comprehensive understanding and practical application, participants must complete all of the following assessments to pass the course:

  1. Pre-Course Activities: (1) Multiple-choice Questions during the e-Learning modules (100% required) (2) Company-specific hazard identification checklist completed and uploaded for review (3) First Aid Needs Assessment completed and uploaded review

  2. Virtual Workshop (Zoom): (1) On-going Q&A from the Tutor during delivery (2) Hands-on risk assessment started during the virtual workshop

  3. End of Virtual Workshop (Zoom) Written Assessment: 45-question multiple choice assessment

  4. Post-Course Project: Finalise and submit your risk assessment project for marking within three weeks of course completion.
